From Small Town Hero to MLB All Star

This post is off topic but a great story.  Nothing is more American than Major  League Baseball and the All Star Game.  One of our admin’s grew up and graduated High School in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Punxsutawney is a small town in Western Pennsylvania most known for the “Groundhog”.  You would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of “The Groundhog” or seen the movie “Groundhog Day”.

Most people do not know anything about this small town besides Punxsutawney Phil and February 2nd.

Would you believe that Chuck Daly, legendary coach of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons, started his coaching career in Punxsutawney in the 1950’s?  Believe it, because he did!

How much bigger than Chuck Daly and the Groundhog could one small town get?

The Answer:

Devin Mesoraco, #39 Catcher for the Cincinnatti Reds.

Devin graduated High School from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and played for the Punxsutawney “Chucks” baseball team.  He set just about every school record there.  He was drafted with he 15th overall pick by the Reds in 2007. And in that time he worked his way into MLB.

This year he has been having quite a remarkable season. At the time of this article he is batting .304 with 16 HR’s and 45 RBI.

He was also selected to the MLB All Star Game – ahead of Buster Posey.  The All Star Game is tomorrow. What are the odds this small town hero blasts one in the bottom of the 9th to win the game?  Astronomical

But so were the odds of Punxsutawney being known for anything other than Groundhog Day!
